Dear Friends,
I have been traveling all across Wisconsin with Dave, watching him talk with people from a variety of backgrounds and I have never been so convinced that this country absolutely needs people like him in office. No conversation is ever the same, but each person we’ve talked to has expressed deep frustration and disappointment our government. People are terrified - they are concerned about their future but even more worried that their children will not have the same opportunity that they have had. The things that make America great - the ability for us to do anything - is being threatened by the state of our economy, illegal immigration, the war on terror...and most of all the lack of leadership in Washington.  

We are responsible for electing great leaders - leaders who will always stand up for what is right and serve the people of this state.  I firmly believe that Dave is that person...he has sacrificed so much for this race because he recognizes the danger that our country is in and he refuses to sit back and watch it happen.  Dave’s strong sense of patriotism and commitment to serving his country whether it be at West Point, in the Army or during this Senate race is admirable and inspiring.  

We cannot allow career politicians or those who are going to spend millions of dollars just to get into office make decisions for us anymore.  Neither of these understand the issues facing the 99% of us Wisconsinites who work hard everyday just to pay our bills and feed our families.  Dave understands the struggles of everyday Americans - he lives them.  But he also has something unique - optimism for the future of this country and a desire to preserve the American Dream. 

This campaign is unlike anything the state has seen before.  Many candidates claim to be running grassroots campaigns but we really, truly are in every sense of the word.  Our primary opponent has said he’s willing to invest $15 million to self-finance his campaign and we’ve seen evidence of that in his television ads. Click here to view the clear differences between Dave and Ron Johnson. While money is not our main focus, it is absolutely vital that we get Dave’s name out there to the people that we have been unable to meet face-to-face.  

We have a fundraising goal of $15,000 by August 7th.  This money will be used to purchase television and radio ads, as well as yard signs to allow us to get a lot of “blaze orange” visibility all across the state.

A New Season Begins...
This past Tuesday, June 1st, marked the start of "nomination season" in the political world.  This is when candidates and campaign volunteers deploy across the state to knock on doors, talk to people in shopping malls and parking lots, and network with friends and neighbors to collect a prescribed number of verifiable signatures in order to be put on the ballot this fall.  It's time consuming, it's challenging, and it's daunting--but it's also a key first step in voicing YOUR opinion regarding who represents you in elected office.
Looking to the Future, Through the Past
Given the challenges our nation faces now with a prolonged recession, an increase in anti-American terrorist activity, an environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and fraud, waste, and abuse in nearly everything our government touches, it's easy to see how our future could look bleak.  American Exceptionalism is being threatened like never before and citizens--regardless of party--are standing up to demand better...to demand more from those they send to Washington.  Americans have a sense of Duty, Honor, and Country...and they know that these three words represent the only antidote to fraud, waste, and abuse--they know that those three words are the lifeblood of American Exceptionalism. 
This "nomination season" is the first chance for you to step up and actively participate in the electoral process.  Find candidates for all offices that you like and back them.  Make sure you know where they stand on the issues, understand their character and integrity, and sign their nomination papers if they are called by Duty, will lead with Honor, and vow to stand up for our Country.  That's the type of new leadership we need in Washington if we're going to defeat fraud, waste, and abuse...if we're ever to get past "politics as usual," or, as President Lincoln aspired, if "this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth." 
Yes, these are important times with important decisions that will impact the course our country takes for years...and you're the key to determining that direction.  This is YOUR time to make a difference...YOUR time to shape our future...YOUR time to stand and be counted...and I invite you to stand with me.  Together--and with Duty, Honor, and Country as our watchwords--we'll keep the torch of liberty lit for generations to come!

This is Memorial Day weekend, 2010--the "unofficial start to summer."  But it's also the official day for Americans to remember the sacrifices and losses of those who have gone before us to preserve liberty and freedom.  Please, as you're out and about this weekend with friends and family, remember the reason we take an extra day off this weekend...and fly an American flag, thank a Veteran, and tell your kids about those who have died to make this an exceptional country.

There is honor in that and we all owe Terrence gratitude for the contributions he made to this race while he was in

it. I also respect Ron Johnson as my sole remaining primary opponent. While the contest with Terrence is coming

to an end, the one with Ron Johnson is just starting...and I ask all political followers and supporters--from all

campaigns and all parties--to stop focusing on the events or controversy of the convention and move forward to

discuss and debate what needs to be done to get Wisconsin--and America--back on her feet again."

Do you want a United States Senator — your Senator — to have words like Honor and Duty be the first words out of his mouth when he speaks? Do you want him to know in his bones, that being a Senator is a sacred trust between him, the people he represents, and the history and legacy of the United States?
I know I do.
 
You have GOT to meet this man. Not only is he made out of the right stuff. He believes it is a matter of duty to retire three-term fat cat leftist powerhouse Russ Feingold. And he has a plan.

Meet David Westlake

I had the pleasure of speaking with Westlake for about 45 minutes the other night. He is a West Point graduate and served several years as a United States Army officer. He speaks of his 4 years at the Academy as having been haunted by the hallways there: by the great men who had walked those halls, and left their mark on history. He was determined to give no less than they had. He believed then and now that America’s taxpayers had not sent him to West Point merely for the years of military service he might provide. His whole lifetime was owed in service to his country.
 
Duty. Honor. Giving. A debt of service. John Adams, George Washington, and James Madison talked like that. So did Nathan Hale. Ditto Chesty Puller, Nimitz, and Patton. The Arlen Specters of the world cynically say “that is my Senate seat”. Fake military heroes like Rich Blumenthal demand respect even after their lies are exposed. Feingold runs around crowing about what great things he’s done for Wisconsin by playing an instrumental role getting the health care takeover shoved down America’s throat (yeah….uh…..thanks, Russ).
David Westlake says that he owes America and Wisconsin his life, his time, and his future.
I like that better.

This is a magnetic, sharp, articulate, driven man. And make no mistake. He’s a three-prong conservative in the Fred Thompson and Jim DeMint mold, a fiscal, social, and national security conservative. Read all you want at his campaign site. He’s preaching small government, less regulation, low taxes, Peace through Strength, securing the borders, 2nd Amendment, free market health care reform that starts with lawsuit reform. Shall we go on? Read the “Issues” pages of his campaign site. Tell me he’s just winging it, or saying what people want to hear. He clearly knows what he believes and why he believes it.

Russ Feingold: far left zealot

You know, I was going to run down the roster of ways in which this three-term machine politician has done a disservice to Wisconsin and to America. I don’t feel like it. Water is wet. We know plenty about why he needs to go down.

The primary competition: Terrence Wall

Westlake faces a primary opponent named Terrence Wall. Wall is a successful businessman, and has a well-financed campaign with a large war chest. His issues page reads like it came off the NRSC-approved template, and I have no particular objection to it. Truthfully, in a year that was not 2010, this might be the guy. After all, Wisconsin is a purple-blue state, and Wall is a squish who talks one way and acts another. Perfect for a swing state.
You see, Terrence Wall has a history of donating to Democrat candidates (including $500 to the odious David Obey, on 1/25/07 [search opensecrets.org]) that seems to track his real estate ventures. In particular, he pimped a Democrat-backed commuter railroad project (he actually wrote a puff piece in Madison’s “In Business” magazine), that would have built a train station on property owned by…….you guessed it, Terrence Wall. Fortunately, Wisconsinites fought it and it fell through. This is not ancient history. This is 2007.
There’s more, and I have details. What I am telling you is that while Westlake and Wall may espouse the same issue stands for the most part, there is a wide gulf between them. One of them is a core conservative and the other is a convenient conservative.

Taking down the Feingold machine

Normally you simply could not take on an entrenched three-term machine politician with national name and power, and take him down. You cannot possibly match him dollar for dollar, grassroots worker for union thug, housewife for dishonest election worker. So you better have a different plan than dollar for dollar, punch for punch.
But this is 2010. Obama has happened. Feingold is in lock-step with a bunch of anti-American yahoos, publicly married to a hard-left, tax-and-spend, freedom-stealing agenda, while America is reeling with 10% unemployment (Wisconsin is at 9.8%), and getting pretty tired of Washington politicians shoving their unwanted agenda down America’s throats.
He’s vulnerable to a smart campaign by a charismatic conservative with a compelling story and a message of honor and duty about himself, and for Wisconsinites a message of lower taxes, less government, a robust market-driven economy, and more freedom. A campaign that reaches the grassroots, that engages Wisconsin’s large center. He wants Wisconsin to know that he is running to represent the whole of Wisconsin, and not just the right.
Westlake recently met for a full day with a room full of liberal young bloggers in Milwaukee. At the end of the day they were not necessarily converts, but they came away with a great deal of respect for him and his issues. They all signed his shirt (long story). He and his campaign have toured the state, meeting business groups, college students, bloggers, firemen, bankers………and people. Lots of people. His message does not change according to who he meets. The conservative message, when championed by a powerful and articulate advocate, is ALWAYS a message of hope and freedom. It resonates everywhere. Reagan knew that. Bush did not.
In his early phase, he’s been building a grassroots organization. When ordinary people hear the conservative message like this, your organization does not have to buy its advocates. They come volunteering. The second phase began May 1, and that is taking the campaign to the larger public and the airwaves. You can donate here, if you want to be a part of it in that way.
But there are many ways of supporting David Westlake. In months to come, there will be a great need for on-the-ground help.

Making the hard call

Remember how in the last few years, certain otherwise “conservative” Senators would pull a brain fart - like voting for TARP, voting against John Bolton for UN Ambassador, or failing to filibuster the Eric Holder nomination, joining that Gang of 14, stuff like that? You understand why that happens, right? It’s because some of these guys are more talk than actual conservative. They haven’t studied John Adams and Russell Kirk: they study the polls and try not to incur media wrath.
Pitcure this. There’s a tough issue being fought in the Senate in 2011. The press is jumping up and down all over those “party of no”, those racist meanie Republicans. Snowe and Collins have predictably folded, and McCain and Graham are negotiating with the Dems for a handful of meaningless amendments. They are certain to eventually go with the Democrats. The final swing vote comes down to the junior Senator from Wisconsin. Who do you want that to be?
 
Wall or Westlake?
Take that to heart. In the primaries, it’s no longer good enough to vote for the guy with deep pockets and name recognition (Crist, Fiorina, ……and Westlake’s primary opponent). This is 2010. We vote the conservative. Marco Rubio and Pat Toomey are our first wave. They already carry bloodied swords.
Feingold can be taken down. Westlake is the one to do it.

The Shoulders We Stand On
As we enter the week of our state convention, I wanted to share with you a sense of pride and optimism that I hold for our party, our state, and our country.  Not only am I proud to be a Republican, I'm proud to be a Republican in Wisconsin...and a Republican in America.  Look at the fantastic shoulders we're standing on: forefathers like Washington, Jefferson and Adams...and Republicans that changed the world like Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ronald Reagan.  As a party, we've got a great history!  As Americans, we've got a lot to be proud of...and as Wisconsin Republicans, we're in great company.
Looking forward, we have to ensure that the shoulders the next generation stands on are as solid as the ones that support us.  We need to demand character, integrity, and leadership in 2010...and when we do we'll re-ignite the torch of liberty that shines a light of hope and freedom into the dark places of the world.  That's what we do as Americans...that's what we demand as Republicans.

Serving Our Country Takes Many Forms...This is a Call to Action!

Serving our country takes many forms, and 'good intentions' or 'waiting until later' are not enough.  There is too much at stake--now--to remain on the sidelines.  When it comes to saving America, this is our call to action...we have a "fierce urgency of now."

Relying on a Malfunction Is In Itself a Failure

On May 1st, America dodged another potentially devastating terrorist attack.  And once again, it was due to malfunctioning explosives and alert civilians that we avoided carnage in the streets of New York City.  The problem is, however, that the bomber was still able to build and deliver a weapon of mass destruction to his intended target, walk away from it without arrest, and nearly flee the country by airplane.  All the while the administration thinks that it's doing a great job cracking down on terror. 

What?

How does a failed bombing attempt--due to a malfunctioning explosive--mean that America's immediate threat from terrorism has passed?  Where are all the leaders on this issues?  Who is standing up to say "no more?"  Who is standing up for the safety of Americans?  Relying on a malfunctioning explosive device is--unfortunately--proof-positive that our national stance on terror is weak, and that we are all still at risk.

Terrorist Acts Are Attempted by Terrorists...Not Defendants

The first reaction of our elected officials after the May 1st bombing attempt was to refer to the suspect as a "defendant."  Isn't someone who attempts to carry out an act of terror a terrorist?  If we're going to ever be able to take this threat seriously, don't we first have to stop being so politically correct about it?  Why isn't the President and his administration leading by example and calling terrorists exactly what they are?  Why are we worried about offending those who want to kill us?  It's time  to take off the "kid gloves" and step into the ring to fight this head-on.

Liberty will always be at odds with tyranny...and Freedom with terror.  Fortunately, liberty and freedom are the paths aligned with our destiny...and will therefore always be the right paths to take.  Let's get back on course, America--the cost of failing to do so is too great!

 Until Education Becomes a Priority, It Will Continue to be a Problem.

In the United States, we spend more on a per-pupil basis to fund education than nearly every other nation in the world...yet we lag significantly in our mastery of math, science, and several other disciplines that will be crucial for us to command  if the United States is to remain a world leader into future generations.  In some evaluations we rank as low as 19 out of 38 nations overall and are a disappointing 19 out of 21 in one subject and demographic area.  This has got to change.  Successively increased funding coupled with deteriorating results is a sign of a failed system...not failing people within the system.

The Problem Crosses All Party Lines

Education reform is not specifically an issue of funding...nor is it an issue exclusive to test scores, metrics, and accountability.  Previous efforts to "fix" education that focused on one of these or the other put teachers in the middle of the reform debate...instead of allowing them to foster a world-class environment in the classroom.  Our teachers primarily want to do a good job...they want to make our kids the best educated in the world, but bureaucratic hurdles hold them back and, in turn, hold our kids back.  This is disastrous for our future.

Having the best educated children in the world MUST be a priority for the United States.  This will only happen when politicians step away from their partisan filters and create an environment for teachers to teach, parents to guide (or, as is the case with home schoolers, also teach), and children to thrive.  That's the basis for American Exceptionalism...and we can do it--for the sake of our future, we MUST do it.

For the last twelve months our campaign has visited nearly every county in this state, piled up over 50,000 miles on my 10-year old SUV, and met face-to-face with well over 10,000 Wisconsinites.  We focused exclusively on taking the "harder right over the easier wrong" and having you tell me your story...and that focus has paid off.

We have hundreds of letters and emails from people across the state with stories about how life--in one way, shape, or form--is more difficult now than it was when Sen. Feingold went to Washington 18 years ago...and they don't want to send him back for 24.  I've laughed with you, I've cried with you, I've hugged and "high-fived" you...and along the way, you've come to understand that I'm a heck of a lot more like you than a career politician or "traditional" candidate is.  You know that I'm a leader made of character and integrity.  You know that I don't have any hidden agendas.  You know that I am absolutely certain as to why I'm in this race: to SERVE the people of Wisconsin...and not a special interest or some other Senator's pet project (and if you haven't signed the "Accountability Shirt" yet--that's my written contract with you guaranteeing this--let me know so you can!).  

That was "Phase I"...now it's time to REALLY get to work...

"Phase II" Brings Down the House...

Besides the personal concerns you shared with us over the last year, we've also discovered that many of you share "cause" concerns as well.  Veterans, home schoolers, Right-to-Life advocates, outdoor sportsmen, small business owners...the list goes on and on...you also need someone to strongly stand up for you--to fight for you--because you don't currently have a voice in government.  Friends, these causes are fundamental components of American Exceptionalism and MUST be fought for!  

And in order to be your conduit into your government, I need money for the fight. 

So "Phase II" is about building on the momentum we started over the last 12 months, raising funds, and creating mobilized coalitions with your causes.  Do you have a passion for a cause?  Let us know and help us fight for it by contributing.  Are you a part of group that needs a voice?  Tell us about it and help me stand up for you by sending a check.  

The first phase of getting out and hearing what's important to you has worked GREAT...and from here on out it's only going to get better.  Join us!  Help us! Take back your country...because together, we can make this the dawn of a new morning in America once again!

"Politics as Usual" Needs to be Much More Unusual...

This week we received literally hundreds of inquiries about an article written by Terrence Wall supporting the prohibitively expensive commuter rail project in Madison.  In summary, you asked how could he have been so enthusiastic about it in his article, then say he opposes it now?  

Simple. It's politics as usual.

And let's clear the air on something right away--this is NOT a "bash Terrence Wall" article...this is an examination of this particular case of "politics as usual" and learning lessons so we can all move forward together with renewed faith and optimism in our political system.

Lesson One: Opinions Change for Political Expediency; Facts Do Not

In this case, commuter rail in Madison would only serve a small portion of Madison residents--let alone Wisconsin citizens--yet it would affect us all in the form in increased taxes.  Obviously, this is not a popular issue in an election year...so you have to ask yourself what changed in Terrence's stance on this issue?  If it was bad for taxpayers when he wrote the article and supported it...and it's still bad for the taxpayers now and he opposes it, what's behind the change of heart?  If a candidate is going to ask you for the most precious thing you control in a democratically-elected republic--your vote--they have to allow you to look them in their eyes...examine them...test them...make sure they share the same character and level of integrity that you believe we need in government or we'll never improve from politics as usual.  

And politics as usual hasn't been good to us lately.

Lesson Two: Money is a Corrupting Force in Politics

Once again, we come back to the topic of money...and [as yet another example of why I refuse to actively spend time raising money at this point of the campaign] we know that serving money and serving the people are diametrically opposed.  Right now I choose to focus my time on building trust with (and showing character to) the people. 

And this isn't just me talking.  Most Americans are bothered that "politics as usual" is beholden to money...so it's no wonder why millions of Americans don't even get off their couches to go vote on election day.  Our campaign, on the other hand, is committed to showing Wisconsin voters who I am first...then we'll raise money based on you're confidence in me truly representing who you are (hence the "I AM DAVE WESTLAKE" t-shirts and signs).

Yes, it's really that simple.  

Again, consider this example--Terrence suggested that his motives for supporting commuter rail was because of a positive experience with it during his internship in London...but as a real estate developer, he likely stood to make a significant amount of money...which calls into question his true motives.  I don't presume to know them, but referencing lesson one above, it's a worthwhile discussion if we're to find out what his--or any candidate's--character is made of.  

Honesty, integrity, and trust with the people MUST come first.  If you don't have these three elements, all the money in the world makes no difference whatsoever.  Sure, you might be able to change "bodies" in Washington--but if you don't change the mindset, you haven't gained a thing...and again, we stay stuck on politics as usual.

And this country is so much better than that.

The Things that Congress Could Learn from Farmers...

[Admittedly, this is one of those topics that makes a lot more sense if you watch the video, but here goes...]

There is perhaps no better industry to illustrate the importance of setting a proper environment for productivity than farming.  If cows aren't able to digest food in a relaxed setting, they won't produce as much milk.  If a growing season doesn't provide an optimal mix of sun, moisture, and soil nutrients, crops don't grow well.  If chickens are artificially stressed, they won't lay eggs and it takes them an unnaturally long time to re-establish confidence in their surroundings to start producing again.

The same holds true for our economy.  Think about it...if the government meddles too much in market operations, businesses don't expand.  If the mix of taxes and revenue aren't optimal, the economy won't grow.  And if there is too much artificial stress (through mandates, regulations, etc.), then the economy freezes and it takes a painfully long time to regain it's footing for expansion.

Of course, in both farming AND the economy, we need to make sure to keep the proverbial "Madoff out of the hen house"...which means that just the right amount of oversight is always necessary...  

Squaking from the Roost

Last week we talked about establishing a tax holiday starting immediately and going through the end of 2011 for all investments in new ventures and expansions of existing companies.  Well, what happens after 2011?  Simple.  To constantly maintain an atmosphere conducive to economic growth, we replicate tax laws as they apply to home ownership: defer capital gains taxes when proceeds are re-invested.  If business investors can defer taxes on gains they make by investing in subsequent businesses, we maintain a uninterrupted flow of start up (or expansion) capital in the economy.  This, in turn, creates constant economic activity, job creation, and an on-going environment that is favorable for a robust American economy.  It's a simple solution that meets the three criteria that we've established as being critical for any program going forward: 1.) it is Constitutional, 2.) it doesn't increase government spending, and 3.) it doesn't grow the size of government.  (...and 4.) it works!)

Friends, we can do this.  And when we get our economy back on track by re-igniting the entrepreneurial flame, we'll be one step closer to a the dawn of a new morning in America, again.

The Multiple Benefits of Tax Holidays

The atmosphere necessary for job creation and economic activity is directly impacted by the government’s tax and spending habits.  Too much of both will kill the entrepreneurial spirit, chill economic activity, and stifle job creation.  Clearly, this is the scenario we face right now. 

Putting Americans back to work and breathing life back into this economy requires swift, bold, and immediate action to create the proper atmosphere for recovery.  This is not a simple process, and it must meet the three criteria for government involvement that our campaign has championed since introducing the topic of the economy…any action must: 1. not increase the size of government, 2. not increase spending, and 3. be Constitutional.  

Therefore, the best way of stimulating the economy while simultaneously meeting the aforementioned criteria is to immediately provide a capital gains tax holiday on all investments made on new ventures or expansion within existing companies through the end of 2011.  By reducing the barriers to investment in start ups or companies that wish to expand, we: 1. promote new company development, 2. promote investments into existing companies to improve themselves, and—when either (or both) of the first two happen—we also 3. promote immediate job creation.  This is obviously exactly what we need.

Teaching the Government "Tough Love"

Beyond this, reducing tax revenue into the federal government also reduces their ability to spend.  If the government refuses to curb their spending appetite on their own, we’ll have to show them “tough love” by cutting back their means to do so (coupled, of course with new elected officials who will not simply raise our national debt limit).

Imagine it…by simply demanding that our government do what it’s supposed to do (shrink itself and cut taxes), we could immediately climb out of the economic woes we’re experiencing, achieve a robust recovery that puts Americans back to work...and we would once again watch the sun rise over the horizon on a new morning in America.

Jobs Are Not “Natural” Things…

Any discussion involving jobs and employment recovery efforts must start with an acknowledgement that government does not—and cannot—create jobs.  Entrepreneurs do.  Government’s sole obligation in the job creation realm is to set the proper atmosphere for entrepreneurs to flourish…and this means creating a favorable risk environment based on tax and spending policies.  The more government taxes and spends, the greater the entrepreneur’s risk toward creating a profit, and, in turn, the less likely the entrepreneur is to create new jobs.  Conversely, conditions are favorable for such risk when government lowers taxes and reduces spending…which is the exact opposite of our current climate. 

Put simply, jobs are not “natural” things—they’re not created unless a very specific and favorable atmosphere is present…and unless government interference and influence is absent.

Government’s Vested Interest in Staying Out

Government has a vested interest in making sure the atmosphere they foster is “job-friendly.”  First, when an economy is strong (and growing) and people are employed, they’re generally happier and are able to provide for their own basic needs and wants.  Secondly, because it provides a set of services that are otherwise infeasible for us to afford individually (such as military protection, fire/police services, etc.), government does need to create tax revenue to pay for these programs.  When the economy is weak and unemployment is high, tax revenue is significantly harder to raise…and raising taxes or imposing new government spending (like on health care programs) severely exacerbates this problem.

It’s going to take leaders with integrity and character to eliminate government programs and cut taxes in Washington so we can start creating jobs again.  And with the right people, ideas, and energy in public office to get government out of the way of the people, ideas and energy in the private sector, there’s no limit on what this great country can accomplish!

The Necessary Components of All Solutions

With Congress debating government-run healthcare solutions in Washington this week, I’ve had dozens of people ask me where I stand on this debate. 

The legislation debated in Washington right now is un-Constitutional and I cannot support it.

That said, the real American tragedy playing out before us is that while career politicians debate un-Constitutional solutions, we all know Americans who really need health insurance but can’t afford it; we all know Americans with pre-existing conditions who need health insurance but can’t qualify for it.  No matter how much the administration tries to “sweeten” the deal for Republicans or bribe Democrats for their vote, they’re fundamentally missing what we really need…and that’s disappointing.

Taking "The Harder Right" Requires Courage, Integrity, and Leadership

Healthcare needs to be solved the same way we’re SUPPOSED to solve all issues that come before the federal government—with three very basic conditions: 

  1.     The solution MUST be Constitutional.
  2.     The solution MUST NOT increase government spending.
  3.     The solution MUST NOT increase the size of government.

Working within these constraints requires tough decisions, open discussion, and strong leadership.  That’s what makes the 2010 elections so critical…we can no longer be satisfied with candidates who put solutions on a website but are ambivalent on leadership.  Ultimately, it’s not the website that will solve our problems…it’s the leaders who are willing to roll up their sleeves, attack these issues head-on, and stand up to special interests and hidden agendas that will pull us through these times.  Make no mistake, the healthcare debate is an indicator of how our future will shape up: we’ll either cede to the whims of a government that ignores us or we’ll stand together—on principle—and usher in a new era of government accountability based on leadership.

Given our past and what’s at stake for the future, my money is on the latter…

Code Red...As In "We're In The Red"
With $3.8 Trillion planned for spending in FY2011—an increase of nearly 10% from just 2 years ago and 25% of our GDP—it’s not hard to see how money that’s being taken out of theprivate sector and being reallocated to the public sector has a catastrophic impact on our economy’s recovery efforts…and on millions of Americans trying to find work.  What’s worse is that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Washington’s spending plans.  If things proceed unchanged, our deficit will rise from $1.3 Trillion this year to $8.5 Trillion over 10 years.  This will double our national debt and set us into a tailspin that we simply will not recover from.  This out-of-control spending must be addressed now.
Making a Name...
There are two things that I’m going to be famous for in the U.S. Senate: 1. Eliminating government programs, and 2. cutting taxes.  No one—regardless of party or position—will stand in my way of getting this done.  This is required for us to emerge from our current economic woes…and it’s the essence of how government is supposed to function.  
So, how will I do this?  Simple—I have two very basic approaches:
  1. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.  Every one of the 25 government program budget lines taxpayers fund needs to be evaluated—and if they’re not providing an essential service—they need to be eliminated.  
  2. Even low taxes are bad for an economy…higher taxes are exponentially worse. Our current tax climate—as well as the threat of future tax increases—is the primary driver behind our slow economy.  Tax reform, coupled with spending restraints, will help labor relocate to the U.S. and make us more viable in the global economy. 
While taking these two areas on may seem daunting, they’re not to me…because it’s the right thing to do.  America was made exceptional on the foundation of taking the “harder right” over the “easier wrong” and this time is no different.  We will emerge from this economic downturn and the United States will continue to be the greatest nation on earth.

Digging Deeper
While it’s easy to pick up a newspaper or listen to the news report on TV or radio and think that you’re hearing about all the challenges facing us in America today, most Americans intuitively know that we’ve got more to address than just a bad economy, a battle with health care, terrorism, corruption in politics, etc.  
And that intuition is exactly right.
Don’t get me wrong—the aforementioned issues (and many more!) are problems that need to be solved…but rather than being individual challenges that can be solved independently, they’re actually symptoms of a much larger concern: a federal government that is growing out of control.  When the government grows at the pace we’ve experienced over the past several years, it take a continuously increasing amount of tax revenue to fund that growth—tax money that comes out of our pockets and, in turn, out of the economy.  Unlike Mr. Smith, when our money goes to Washington, it ceases to work for us…and that’s a problem.  
Mobilizing for the Solution
The unfortunate truth behind our growing government is that its size is directly proportional to the lack of integrity and character of the people we send to Washington to run it.  The solution to this problem, however, is simple—we need to stop electing people who have conflicting or self-serving interests.  If someone is in a political race for any other reason than because they’re called out of a sense of duty to do so, things won’t change.  If a candidate’s sense of honor is clouded by corruption or speculation thereof, then our problems will not be solved.  And if an office seeker’s motivation is anything other than devotion to our Country and all that she stands for, then our issues will persist.
The good news is, however, is that America is waking up to this truth…and it looks like November will bring the dawn of a new morning for our “shining city on the hill.”

 Getting Back to Basics

The chief concern of our Founding Fathers as they were setting up our republican form of government was that it would devolve into a too-big, too-powerful central body that usurped the power of the people and made decisions independent of the peoples’ will.

Clearly, these men knew what they were talking about…

To that end—and to prevent our nation from slipping back into that which they had just fought a revolutionary war to free themselves from—the Framers outlined the roles and responsibilities of our Congress in the Constitution.  The charter they passed on to the federal legislature is simple: keep us safe, keep the size of government in check (yes, they expected public servants to “police their own ranks”), and to ensure access to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.  

Oddly enough, the Founders did not envision the federal government cutting back-room deals or keeping legislation from the citizens or voting one way on a bill when public sentiment reflects something different.  The Founders’ intent has not changed—so why has the behavior of our Members of Congress?  Shouldn’t we expect better?  Shouldn’t we demand accountability?  Of course we should…and when it comes to our government, it’s about time we get back to basics.

Westlake Campaign: AP misleads voters on Westlake's tax history

 (Watertown, WI)- Dave Westlake, candidate for U.S. Senate from Watertown, denounced the AP for misleading Wisconsin voters today by printing an article that states he did not pay taxes to the state of Wisconsin in 2002.  Westlake did not live in Wisconsin that year and, as such, did not owe any Wisconsin income taxes.  He did, however, pay state income taxes in his state of residence in 2002.

"I know that the public shares my frustration with irresponsible reporting like this.  It would have been very simple to do a little more fact-checking to find out that I didn't pay Wisconsin income taxes in 2002 because I did not live here that year.  As I talk with thousands of Wisconsinites each week when I'm out traveling the state, I personally commit to them that our campaign will not engage in antics like this, nor will we use these tactics against our opponents.  It's really unfortunate that this race has stooped to this level already--but I remain firmly committed to always taking the honorable course in this campaign, regardless of what is thrown at me."  Westlake states that he is proud to contribute his financial obligation to our state through paying his taxes and to suggest otherwise is nothing more than an attempt to personally besmirch him.  "Stories like this turn everyone off.  Is it any surprise when you print false political stories that no one wants to get involved in the political process?  Malicious stories like this make ALL of us suffer...not just candidates."

 Westlake continued "We're doing the right thing by running an open, honest, and responsible campaign...and when I'm elected, I'll lead with dignity, honor, and class--and in a way that will make irresponsible reporting and irresponsible politics universally frowned upon again.  In the mean time, the AP owes the public an apology and an article that clearly states the truth.  When citizens are trying to fulfill their civic duty and become informed voters, they expect honesty and integrity from the candidates and the press.  We're delivering on our end of the bargain and the people of Wisconsin have told me they appreciate that."
