RACINE GOP LEADERS CALL FOR REPEAL OF PREVAILING WAGE
During the course of debate on the State Budget, the leadership of the Racine County Republican Party are urging state legislators to repeal Wisconsin’s outdated prevailing wage law.
“Repealing the prevailing wage will save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars,” said Chairman Bill Folk. “Ending prevailing wage is overdue, and is just common sense."
Under the prevailing wage, government projects must be paid at a wage that is usually equal union wages. This leads to artificially high project costs, when a job may been done using less taxpayer dollars if the prevailing wage was not in place. According to some studies, repealing the prevailing wage could generate several hundred million dollar savings every year. This money can be used for tax relief, additional projects or other programs.
“Republicans are for less government spending, saving taxpayer dollars whenever possible, and believe in the free market,” said Chairman Folk. “The prevailing wage is the exact opposite of those principles. If having record majorities is the Legislature isn't the time to repeal it, when is the time?”
