Neumann to Walker: "Return the money"

WAUKESHA, Wis. - May 19, 2010 - Candidate for Governor Mark Neumann issued the following statement about a complaint filed Tuesday with the state Government Accountability Board, regarding campaign activity in the office of Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker.

A separate complaint was filed Friday with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office seeking a criminal investigation. These complaints were not filed by the Neumann campaign, or anyone affiliated with the Neumann campaign. Both complaints were filed after an employee in Walker's office quit in the wake of a newspaper investigation that revealed the worker was campaigning on county time.

In addition, official schedules released by the County Executive's office show Walker has taken the equivalent of 128 paid 'personal' days in a 14 month period, from January 2009 through February 2010.

"Whenever government employees engage in campaign activity on the taxpayer's dime, it is troubling news. The regulations are clear on the use of taxpayer dollars to help a candidate's campaign. It may be illegal and it is certainly unethical.

"That said, I am confident Scott Walker will do the right thing and reimburse taxpayers for all of the time he and his staff have spent campaigning while on the county clock."
