WKOW in Madison is reporting that Doyle Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel will launch his campaign next week. After spending the last 18 months headlining Democrat fundraisers and even considering a run for governor as a Democrat, I know that his party switch has come as a surprise to many conservatives.
As his campaign begins, my campaign will continue to focus on the issues that matter to Wisconsin: creating jobs, controlling spending and lowering health care costs.
As a business owner, I have spent the last 20 years of my life creating jobs, balancing budgets, controlling costs and finding innovative ways to lower health care costs for my employees. Our nation is facing enormous challenges, but the solutions can only be found in the real world experience of political outsiders not the political world of career politicians.
Some pundits have suggested that I will face difficulty as a first-time candidate running against accomplished politicians like Dick Leinenkugel and Russ Feingold. I think they're wrong. As I've traveled the state over the last six months, I have heard the message loud and clear. Wisconsin is tired of career politicians. They're demanding an honest outsider who will go to Washington and fight for them.
And the polls support my position. Today's Rasmussen poll shows me gaining substantial ground against Feingold, now only six points behind. I am also ahead of the other potential Republican candidates, with Westlake behind by 11 points and Leinenkugel behind by 12 points.
I need your help to stand up to Russ Feingold and Jim Doyle's favorite Republican.
My campaign issued a strong first quarter fundraising report with more than $1 million cash on hand. In particular, we received tremendous support from grassroots donors. Your contribution of $10, $20, $50, $100 or more will help us continue our fight against Russ Feingold's national network of far-left activists. I hope I can count on you to join our cause and contribute to our campaign.
