MARK NEUMANN STANDS UP FOR HEALTHCARE CHOICE IN WISCONSIN
Neumann organizes petition drive to challenge federal bill
Candidate for Governor calls for state Justice Dept. action
Supports state constitutional amendment after 219-212 virtual party-line vote in House
Neumann: Federal healthcare mandates ‘wrong prescription’ for Wisconsin
WAUKESHA, Wis. - March 22, 2010 - Candidate for Governor Mark Neumann today called on the state Department of Justice to take any action necessary to protect private healthcare choice, including filing a lawsuit against potentially unconstitutional provisions and securing Wisconsin’s ability to opt out offederal mandates. Neumann made the call for action today after the House voted 219-212, virtually along party lines, to support a massive government intrusion into healthcare.
Neumann also announced the creation of a new online petition drive at http://StrongWisconsin.com/healthcare/justice to urge the state Justice Department and Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to take action to protect Wisconsin.
“Sunday night’s vote completely ignored the will of the people in Wisconsin and across the nation,” Neumann said. “This extreme, trillion dollar takeover of one-sixth of our nation’s economy is very bad medicine for our state and nation.”
The Neumann campaign previously created an online petition to urge Congress not to support the healthcare bill. To date, about 10,000 people have signed that petition.
“New taxes, new fees, and explosive growth in the national debt are the wrong prescription for what ails healthcare,” Neumann said. “From my time in Congress in the 1990s, I learned to spot a federal government boondoggle from a mile away. As Governor, I will make sure the Attorney General’s office has the resources needed to protect Wisconsin from this unfair and potentially unconstitutional program.”
Neumann also renewed his support for a state constitutional amendment that would preserve private, individual healthcare options and prevent forced participation in health insurance programs in Wisconsin. The decision to pass an amendment is ultimately put in the hands of state voters. A proposed amendment was introduced in the current legislative session.
Neumann said the healthcare bill pushed through Congress relies on budget gimmicks and will drive up taxes and costs, putting a damper on job growth at a critical time in Wisconsin.
“And, rest assured that favors will continue to be doled out in the months ahead to politicians who held their noses and voted for this massive government mistake against the wishes of their constituents,” Neumann noted. “It is a great disservice to our state and nation.
“We will know more in the weeks ahead about specific carve-outs that were handed out to help secure votes,” Neumann added. “These backroom deals put certain states, including Wisconsin, at a clear disadvantage. It violates commerce and tax uniformity guarantees to treat some states differently from others, and as Governor I will not stand for it.”
